Getting There

Flying to "The Rock" (the local name for the island of Newfoundland) by Plane
Book your flights into St. John's, Newfoundland Airport, airport code YYT. This is the capital of the province.

*Newark, NJ, Toronto, ON and Montreal, QC are major hubs where you will likely be routed into and then on to St. John's.

Virginia's tips on hunting for cheap flights:

  • Virginia has found some of the best deals on www.faregeek.com
  • United airlines is often a price leader to St. Johns.
  • This is a great website to compare lots of airline ticket vendors and find the best prices www.tripadvisor.com Virginia recommends comparing at least 3 websites and if possible looking at a couple different date combinations.
  • If you can take enough time off from work, you will find the cheapest flights traveling on Tuesdays & Wednesdays.
  • If you start shopping now I expect you should be able to find tickets around $400 - $500 round trip. I typically procrastinate and can find tickets for $600 - $800 round trip a month or so prior to traveling.
  • For those with extra time or looking for a fun adventure, it is possible to fly into Boston/NH/Maine and drive up. You'll get to see some picturesque provinces. (Note: you will have to take a ferry from mainland Canada to the Island of Newfoundland. See below info on the ferry).
  • You can set up custom e-mails for your route on several of the airline ticket websites. Some let you pick a price and will notify you when the tickets for that route/date drop below a certain price.

Driving to "The Rock" by Car and Ferry
The island can be also accessed by car via Marine Atlantic ferries, which operate between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. These "superferries" carry hundreds of vehicles and passengers to two entry points. There is a year-round, daily service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Port aux Basques, in southwestern Newfoundland, and a June to September service between North Sydney and Argentia, Newfoundland (which is a 90-minute drive from the capital city of St. John's).

Getting around once you arrive
-You can choose to rent a car or use taxis - Avis, Budget, Enterprise, HertzNational, and Thrifty all have hubs at the airport.

-Around St. John's - Most of the points of interest in St. John's are walking distance from the hotels. Also, inexpensive taxis are readily available all around the city.

-Getting to Bonavista - Drive or use Marsh's taxi service - 709-468-7715 - running small transit buses between St. John's and Bonavista daily. This is a nice relaxing option for the 3.5 hour ride up to Bonavista. They will pick you up at the airport, your hotel, any location you specify. Same goes for return trip ;)

-Once in Bonavista - many points of interest can be reached on foot in this peaceful fishing village. Also, inexpensive local taxis are readily available throughout town.
