Later we decided to move in together and found an amazing apartment. A dream apartment. Two floors in all, all to ourselves, in a historic house with a beautiful front porch and a huge room for Virginia's many projects, which I also loved to help with, even if I wasn't the best.
Virginia and I knew that we were going to be together for the rest of our lives. We discussed an engagement and both felt that it would be best if she picked out her dream engagement ring. We fell upon a jewelry store in Putnum, CT that sold vintage jewelry. While browsing the stash of rings, Virginia found the perfect antique ring, an Art Deco era piece. We purchased the ring awaiting the perfect moment to pop the magic question.
A tragedy happened to Virginia and I: my uncle died on a job site while we were working on a fishing boat. On the same fishing boat I got a horrible skin infection in my knee called cellulitis, a bacterial infection that affects the skin cells and causes them to swell. The infection spread throughout my leg and made it painful to walk, but with Virginia's love and help and a ton of antibiotics, a few that I was allergic to, I fought the infection.
At one point I could not bend my knee but with an outstretched, badly infected knee and a crutch under my arm, I got on my good knee and asked Virginia would she marry me. My heart filled with joy when I heard her say "yes" and there was no pain that could fill me after I heard that one blissful word. I was so happy that I've found my lifelong partner, my soul mate, my best friend.
